Believe it or not, the first TV image transmitted consisted of a dollar sign composed of 60 horizontal lines - a primitive, 'first generation' television from the 1920s. Ninety years later, surrounded by multi-channel, high definition, 32 inch plus flat screens, such humble roots are hardly recognisable.
Last Sunday (29 Jan), as football fans across the UK filed into pubs to watch a top-of-the-table clash, certain pubs dished out cardboard-framed glasses when they served punters their pint, becoming the first to screen live sport in 3D. This was merely a taster: Sky is launching a dedicated 3D channel in April. However, as 3D muscles its way into the mainstream, and high definition becomes the norm, another distinct phenomenon is gearing up to revolutionise television viewing in a very different manner.
TellyLinks.com is a website that will merge two of the biggest media of the 21st century, television and internet, by providing live, contextual links to TV programmes. In an era of blackberries, iphones and wi-fi, perusing the net when watching TV has become the norm: some 74% of young people multitask between the internet and TV. TellyLinks.com, launching this February, is the first service tailored to cater for such an audience.
